So begins the new poetry commissioned from Amy Ludwig VanDerwater for this year’s youth concerts. Join us as we celebrate the diverse community of the orchestra!
Being able to recognize and appreciate similarities and differences is an important skill for young learners and this program exercises this skill through active listening. Using Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra as the centerpiece of this program, we compare and contrast the unique sounds in the orchestra community using Amy Ludwig VanDerwater’s beautiful poetic imagery as a guide. Students will actively hear and feel differences in the music, such as high/low, fast/slow and loud/soft through engaged listening and movement. Celebrating our diverse community beyond the concert hall we include sing-alongs of God Bless America and the beautiful Mexican folk song, De Colores. Come discover different sounds blending together in harmony in our musical community.
This program aligns with Common Core Learning Standards for ELA and Literacy.
